Marking Remembrance Day This Year

Date

With Remembrance Day just around the corner, a local resident has gone the extra mile to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice during World War I from the town and who are named on the Queensway War Memorial.‘Eh Oop Flower’ has created a net of 300 crocheted poppies, representing:

  • The red poppy to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in World War I and in conflicts that followed.
  • The purple poppy is often worn to remember animals that have been victims of war.
  • The black poppy represents African and Caribbean communities' contribution to the war effort, as servicemen and servicewomen, and as civilians.

You will be able to see this beautiful act of kindness from Monday 8th November until Monday 22nd November at the War Memorial. In addition, Eh Oop Flower has hidden a number of ‘Remember Me’ cards around the town and surrounding areas with the name of a Soldier and a crocheted poppy. These will be placed from 30th October and if you find one, please take it home with you and find out more about the Soldier’s story. The first poppy Eh Oop Flower made was to commemorate the centenary of the local resident’s Great Uncle’s death. Whilst placing at the War Memorial, a little boy was looking out of a window at Knowles School, wondering what she was doing and she realised that many did not really know what had happened all those years ago.If you find one, please acknowledge it on the Eh Oop Flower Facebook Page.
